In this project we are interested in the how of internet use and the operationalization and validation of so called modes of internet use - strategies that users adopt to deal with the amount of information online.

Modes of internet use also have a high practical benefit because they can serve as useful criteria for the segmentation of target groups. Knowledge about the how of internet use allows for better decision making when designing and structuring online content for specific audiences.

Theoretical background
Suckfüll (2004) defines the construct modes of internet use as interplay of a dynamic reception- and using process, an interrelatedness of medium and user and an impact of the situational context. Modes refer to the HOW of internet use, i.e. user behaviour and overall strategies. The observation of specific modes could serve as an indicator for target groups and allows conclusions about online design.

Suckfüll, M. (2004). Rezeptionsmodalitäten- Ein integratives Konstukt für die Medienwirkungsforschung. München: Reinhard Fischer.

Methodological strategy
We pursue a successive research strategy, called interplay of theory and data.

think aloud study > retrieval tasks > formulating 150 items > selection of 70 items > online-survey - 374 participants - five point rating scale

Maneesh Agrawala and Chris Stolte from Stanford University present in their paper a set of cartographic generalization techniques specifically designed to improve the usability of route maps. Feedback from over 2200 users indicates that almost all believe LineDrive maps are preferable to using standard computer-generated route maps alone.

Whether it’s a brand, a high-profile businessman or a magazine, those right at the top will evoke a distinct picture in the consumer’s mind. To be consistently different and to create a unique and unmistakable image is the objective of all brand communication. The role that design and typography plays in this will be explored at the TYPO Berlin 2008.

We report live from the “Haus der Kulturen der Welt” where the Typo 2008 takes place. Three days long from Thursday to Saturday there meet, discuss and talk important personages of the typography and graphic design scene.

E.g. Holger Schmidhuber and Rolf Mehnert of Fuenfwerken Design AG analyse the phenomenon of esire for authenticity and show how and why, even though identity and authentic values cannot be invented, they can be discovered and developed. The desire for authenticity brings in clients, makes enterprises insecure, upsets brand and image concepts and dooms traditional advertising and PR to miserable failure. Holger and Rolf talk today at 6.00pm

The First Day:

A great anacrusis of the TYPO 2008 was the talk of Jonathan Barnbrook. “Hello motherfuckers, small penises and fat asses” Barnbrook he welcome the audience. He discussed how naming a typeface after a serial killer can be very bad for your own image and why it is necessary to constantly draw fonts in order to express the spirit of an age. He also talked about his typeface designs for Émigré (Ma[n]son, Exocet, Priori) and his own company Virus (Bastard, Prozac, Nixon etc) and showed word from his students.

I just pic out some speakers. And also a great event was the speech of Kurt Weidemann. “Business is no kissing game.” He talked about the way we do communicating. “Communication takes time and alot of get s lost!”

First Day:
